Toronto Tempo: Canada’s First WNBA Team Reveals Name and Brand Identity
Canada’s first WNBA team officially has a name: the Toronto Tempo. The name aims to reflect the rhythm of Toronto, the pulse of Canadian culture, and the energy of basketball itself.
“Tempo is pace. It’s speed. It’s a heartbeat,” said Teresa Resch, president of the Toronto Tempo. “It’s what you feel when you step into the streets of this city and in the energy of the people who call Canada home. As Canada’s WNBA team, I know the Tempo will set our own pace, move at a championship cadence, and inspire people across this country.”
The name “Tempo” emerged from “Name Your Team,” an innovative public engagement program that invited fans across Canada and around the globe to contribute their ideas. Over 10,000 submissions were received, with the final selection shaped by community input and a specially convened council. The bilingual nature of the name was an intentional nod to inclusivity, ensuring the team represents fans from all parts of Canada.
A Logo Full of Meaning
The team’s logo encapsulates its values and aspirations. Featuring a design with sharp angles, round curves, and a forward-leaning motion, the logo symbolizes progress and dynamism. Its six lines represent the five players on the court and the “sixth player”: the fans.
“Tempo reflects what fans can expect from this team,” Resch explained. “The sounds of the court. The beat of the music. The passion of the fans around you and the intensity of the players on the floor.”
Setting the Stage for 2026
Fans eager to support the Toronto Tempo won’t have to wait long for merchandise, as a branded line will be available soon. Sign-ups are open at www.tempo.wnba.com for updates on tickets, contests, and exclusive announcements.
The Tempo will begin play in 2026 at Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum, aiming to bring championship energy to Canada’s sports landscape.
“This team will move to its own rhythm,” Resch said. “And Canada will feel it.”
