Kate Martin Thrilled to Help Build Golden State Valkyries in Historic Debut
The Golden State Valkyries concluded the 2024 WNBA Expansion Draft by assembling a roster they believe can compete immediately while laying the groundwork for long-term success. General manager Ohemaa Nyanin and head coach Natalie Nakase expressed excitement about the 11 players selected and emphasized a focus on competitiveness, versatility, and high character.
“We are excited to have officially started the journey of building the Golden State Valkyries 2025 team,” Nyanin said. “Our goal was to construct a roster that embodies both versatility and depth, bringing in a strong mix of leadership, defense, and scoring ability.”
The draft selections include players with championship pedigrees, such as Iliana Rupert and Kayla Thornton, and a global influence with seven international players. Nakase, known for her detail-oriented style, noted that competitiveness was a key attribute in all her picks. “These players will do anything it takes to win, and they’re high-character individuals. That’s the type of culture we want to build here,” Nakase said. The coach arrived to Golden State from the Las Vegas Aces as the first assistant coach.
Kate Martin, a guard selected from the Aces in the expansion draft, couldn’t contain her excitement about joining the Valkyries as they prepare for their inaugural season. “Being a part of history is something really cool and something I’m going to be able to talk about for the rest of my life,” Martin said. “I feel really grateful that they chose me, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Golden State drafted 11 players who exemplify versatility and competitiveness. Nyanin described the roster as “competitive,” while Nakase emphasized the team’s focus on building a culture of connection and relentless effort.
Martin, who brings high-caliber experience from her time with Las Vegas as a rookie, embodies these qualities and has already developed a close relationship with Nakase. “Coach Nat is the type of coach you want to run through a brick wall for,” Martin said. “I’m just excited to bring that winning culture here to San Francisco.”
With the draft complete, the Valkyries now turn to free agency and the 2025 WNBA Draft, where they hold the fifth overall pick. The team will debut on May 16 at Chase Center against the Los Angeles Sparks, marking a historic moment for the franchise and the Bay Area.
The journey ahead excites Martin, who sees the opportunity as a fresh start. “This is a new beginning for all of us, and I’m just looking forward to learning, competing, and building something special here in Golden State.”
