WNBA Prepares for Critical CBA Negotiations After Players Union Opts Out Of Current Agreement

2024 WNBA Game Balls

The WNBA is heading toward significant collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations after the WNBA Players Association (WNBPA) opted out of the current agreement, two years ahead of its expiration. The decision, announced Monday, allows both sides time to negotiate a new deal before the current CBA ends after the 2025 season.

The opt-out comes at a time of tremendous growth for the league, which just wrapped up a record-setting 2024 season. The WNBA saw substantial increases in attendance and television viewership, culminating in a dramatic WNBA Finals in which the New York Liberty defeated the Minnesota Lynx in an overtime Game 5. ESPN reported a 170% rise in regular-season viewership, further solidifying the league’s momentum.

Players Push for Change

WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike indicated that opting out was necessary for the league to continue evolving with the times. The current CBA, signed in 2020, brought notable improvements in salaries benefits. However, players have expressed the need for further advancements, particularly in areas like revenue sharing, player compensation, and travel conditions, including the ongoing debate over charter flights.

Commissioner Emphasizes Collaboration

In response to the WNBPA’s decision, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert expressed her optimism about working together to create a new agreement that reflects the league’s continued growth.

“With the historic 2024 WNBA season now in the books, we look forward to working together with the players and the WNBPA on a new CBA that is fair for all and lays the foundation for growth and success for years to come,” Engelbert said.

The 2024 season also saw the WNBA secure an 11-year media rights deal worth $200 million annually, further establishing the league’s growing presence in the sports landscape.

Looking Ahead

While the current CBA remains in effect for another year, both the league and its players recognize the importance of reaching an agreement that can support the WNBA’s rapid growth. As the league continues to expand, both in viewership and commercial success, the upcoming negotiations are expected to address key issues that will shape the future of women’s professional basketball.

With the 2025 season on the horizon, these talks will be crucial in determining how the WNBA navigates its continued rise, with players, fans, and stakeholders watching closely to see how the league balances progress with sustainability.
