Sandy Brondello named head coach of the New York Liberty
After parting ways with the Phoenix Mercury last month, Sandy Brondello lands in New York. The coaching veteran takes over the Liberty with 17 years of coaching experience as a head coach and assistant. Under her charge, the Mercury won the 2014 WNBA Championship. However, in early December 2021, the Mercury decided not to renew her contract.
“Sandy brings a wealth of coaching experience and is a proven winner with a championship pedigree, both as a player and coach in the WNBA and internationally,” said Liberty General Manager Jonathan Kolb. “Throughout her longstanding professional coaching career, she has demonstrated her ability to build consistent and sustained success as a skilled leader and mentor on and off the court. We are thrilled to welcome her to New York as we move forward in our pursuit of winning a WNBA Championship.”
As a player, the three-time Olympian spent 17 years as a pro in the WNBA and WNBL, and she serves as the head coach of the Australian National Team.
With the Liberty, Brondello will be the ninth coach in the franchise’s history. The team fired Walt Hopkins last month after two seasons. He compiled a 14-40 record during his first stint as a head coach. Over Brondello’s nine seasons as a head coach, she earned a 164-128 record with a 24-19 postseason mark.
