The 2022 WNBA season tips off May 6 with an expanded schedule
The 2022 WNBA regular season gets an early start on May 6 and features an expanded schedule of 36 games per team. The 36-game slate was initially announced Nov. 18.
Next year’s regular season ends on August 14. The schedule needs to end by mid-September as the FIBA Women’s World Cup competition begins September 22 in Sydney, Australia.
Features of the 2022 schedule:
- All 12 teams will see action on opening weekend.
- The league will have a “series” play format again. “In some instances where a team is scheduled to play twice in the same city, those games have been scheduled to be played consecutively.”
- The Commissioner’s Cup returns for a second season. The in-season tournament pits conference rivals against each other in the first half of the regular season. The competition features a prize pool with the championship game of the Cup on Tuesday, July 26.
- The All-Star game is scheduled for Sunday, July 10.
- The playoffs will feature a new format announced last month that includes three rounds of series-play using a best-of 3-5-5 format.
- WNBA teams can begin negotiating with free agents on January 15.
- Free agents can sign contracts with teams beginning on February 1.
