WNBA 2021 Free Agency List and Tracker
As of February 1, 2021, teams and players can finalize deals, sign contracts, and agree to offer sheets. Teams began negotiations with their reserved players as well as restricted and unrestricted free agents on January 15.
Free Agency Definitions
-
- Core Players: The Core designation gives a team exclusive negotiating rights with the player. Players can receive a Core designation only three times in their career. In 2022, it will be two times in their careers.
- Reserved players: Players with three or fewer years of service can receive Qualifying Offers to become Reserved Players. The player’s prior team has exclusive negotiating rights.
- Restricted Free Agents: Players with four years of service can receive Qualifying Offers to become Restricted Free Agents. Restricted free agency gives the player’s prior team the right to sign the player by matching a contract offer from another team (Right of First Refusal). If the player signs an Offer Sheet with another team, the player’s prior team has four days from the date it receives the Offer Sheet to determine whether it wishes to match. If the offer is matched, the player will remain with her prior team. If the offer is not matched within the four-day period, the player will be under contract with the offering team.
- Unrestricted Free Agents: Players with fewer than five years of service who do not receive Qualifying Offers become unrestricted free agents. An unrestricted free agent is free to sign with any team provided that she is not designated as a Core Player by her prior team.
Expired Contract/Team Maintains Exclusive Negotiating Rights - Expired Contract/Team Maintains Exclusive Negotiating Rights: Teams maintain exclusive negotiating rights in 2021 for these players who opted out or otherwise did not participate for the final season of their contract. Â Players with expired contracts are free to negotiate contracts with their own team but they may not negotiate with any other WNBA teams.
