STI/Hoopfeed Poll for 2/25/20: A week of upsets but the top three remain the same
Some ranked teams go down but top three persevere
With conference tournaments on the horizon, the regular season continues to provide a bounty of upsets and surprises. As the top three teams in the country survived, several other programs experienced setbacks, some at the hands of unranked teams.
South Carolina is still No. 1 and claimed the SEC regular-season title with a win over Kentucky on Sunday. No. 3 Baylor continued to dominate the Big 12 and clinched a share of the conference title with a 64-39 rout of West Virginia Monday night.
No. 3 Oregon’s week included several record-breaking performances for Ducks senior guard Sabrina Ionescu as she earned two triple-doubles over the weekend. She capped her efforts Monday night against Stanford by becoming the first NCAA DI player, female or male, to reach 2,000 points, 1,000 assists, and 1,000 rebounds. After the loss to Oregon, Stanford fell a spot in the poll to No. 5.
Louisville advanced a place to No. 4, taking down Georgia Tech then Pittsburgh last week. Maryland also rose in the rankings, two places, to No. 6. The Terrapins rolled over Penn State and Wisconsin and are on a 12-game win streak.
UCLA dropped two spots to No. 8 due to a loss on the road Sunday at Washington. No.13 Arizona, No. 17 Oregon State, and No. 25 Arizona State rounded out the ranked Pac-12 teams that suffered losses over the week.
In the Big East, the DePaul Blue Demons tumbled four places to No. 16 after losing to Villanova Monday night. It was a special night for Wildcats as it was the last home game for head coach Harry Perretta. He is set to retire after 42 years of coaching.
Arkansas fell out of the poll. Unranked Florida beat the Razorbacks 83-80 on Sunday.
Other teams that received votes: Arkansas, Florida Gulf Coast, and Duke.
