Starters for the 2019 All-Star Game announced, Elena Delle Donne and A’ja Wilson named team captains

Washington’s Elena Delle Donne and Las Vegas’ A’ja Wilson lead the list of players selected by fans, WNBA players and media to start in the 2019 WNBA All-Star Game. As the two players who finished with the most fan votes, Delle Donne and Wilson will serve as team captains and draft the All-Star Game rosters from the pool of players voted as starters and reserves.

Las Vegas head coach Bill Laimbeer and Washington head coach Mike Thibault are the head coaches for the game.

Team Delle Donne and Team Wilson will face off Saturday, July 27 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas at 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. local time. ABC will televise the game.

Head coaches will select 12 reserves who will be announced on Monday, July 15. Per the league “coaches will vote for three guards, five frontcourt players and four players at either position regardless of conference. They may not vote for their own players.”

The All-Star Starter Pool:

  • Liz Cambage, Aces (3rd All-Star selection)
  • Elena Delle Donne, Mystics (6th All-Star selection)
  • Chelsea Gray, Sparks (3rd All-Star selection)
  • Brittney Griner, Mercury (6th All-Star selection)
  • Natasha Howard, Storm (1st All-Star selection)

Overall voting and score results

Fans accounted for 50 percent of the votes to determine the starters. Scores are based on results from all three voting groups for the top finishers at each position.  Each player’s score is weighted based on 50 percent for fan vote, 25 percent for player vote and 25 percent for media vote. The formula to determine a player’s score is (Fan Rank * 2 + Player Rank + Media Rank)/4. Fan voting served as the tiebreaker for players in a position group with the same score.  Griner (17,217 fan votes) won the tiebreaker with Mercury teammate DeWanna Bonner (17,138) for a starting frontcourt spot.
