The first SportTours International/Hoopfeed Poll of 2019 comes after a pre-holiday weekend of some stunning upsets. While UConn finished the first half the season undefeated and reigning over the poll at No. 1, six ranked (or previously ranked) teams experienced losses over the past few days. Four of those teams fell on Sunday.

Michigan State moved up seven spots in the poll landing at No. 14 after taking down last week’s No. 16 Iowa. The Hawkeyes are at the No. 18 spot this week after the defeat.

Central Michigan took down last week’s No. 24 team Miami in Coral Gables. As a result, the Hurricanes fell completely out of the poll with not a single vote in their favor.

On their second trip to the West Coast this season, the unranked Harvard Crimson left the Bay Area victorious after defeating California in Berkeley. The Golden Bears had no answers for Harvard’s three-point prowess as the Ivy League school shot 54.2 percent from beyond the arc and beat their opponent 85-79. Cal fell six places in the poll to No. 19.

Arizona capped a 10-game winning streak by taking down in-state rival Arizona State, 51-39, with suffocating defense. In their Pac-12 opener, the Wildcats held the Sun Devils to a season low in points as ASU shot just 23 percent from the field. Former Washington player Aari McDonald led Arizona with a game-high 24 points plus six rebounds. Arizona State dropped to No. 23 from No. 17.

New Year’s Eve saw some surprising results with Maryland falling on their home court to Rutgers in a rebounding showdown. The Scarlet Knights were powerhouses on the boards, outrebounding Maryland 38-28, an impressive statistic given the fact that the Terrapins came into the game as second in the nation in rebounding margin (17.0) and fifth in rebounds per game (48.3).

Unranked Michigan closed out the year and opened their Big Ten campaign by handing Minnesota its first loss of the season, 76-60. The Gophers came into the game with 12 straight wins and ranked at No. 12. After falling to the Maize and Blue, Minnesota is No. 15 this week. Michigan received votes this week but not enough to break through to the top 25.

Iowa State re-entered the poll at No. 25. The Cyclones enter Big 12 play this week on a four-game winning streak.

Utah just missed making the top 25 cut. The undefeated Utes opened Pac-12 play on Sunday with a 76-61 win over Colorado for their 12th victory of the season.

  • Other teams that received votes: Utah, Drake, West Virginia, Michigan, Missouri, South Dakota, Arizona and Florida State.
  • Dropped out: Miami.
