With the last week of the regular season in progress and conference tournaments beginning, Connecticut maintains the No. 1 spot in the Sport Tours International/Hoopfeed poll, a position the Huskies have held all season. No. 2 Mississippi State capped a historic, undefeated regular season with an 85-63 win on the road Sunday at Kentucky.
There were no changes in the top six as Baylor, Louisville, Notre Dame and Oregon round out the top teams.
No. 7 Texas rose two spots after winning at Iowa State then beating Oklahoma. No. 8 South Carolina fell two places after losing to Tennessee 65-46 on Sunday. A’ja Wilson, the star center for the Gamecocks, did not play as she was suffering form a case of vertigo. The win propelled South Carolina’s opponent, the Lady Vols, four places to rise and land at No. 11.
No. 10 Oregon State improved its position in the poll by two places after a road sweep of the Pac-12’s Arizona schools.
After a tough 82-63 loss at Texas A&M, Missouri fell four places to rest at No. 14. However, No. 20 Maryland had the biggest drop in the poll, falling six spots. While the Terrapins beat Nebraska on Sunday, that victory came after a three-game losing streak with defeats at the hands of Purdue, Minnesota and Michigan.
Iowa re-entered the poll at No. 25. The Hawkeyes finished the regular season with a seven-game win streak that included two overtime victories.
Oklahoma State fell out of the poll. The Cowgirls had a mixed week, starting off with a loss to Kansas before picking up two victories to end the regular season.
Other teams that received votes: Arizona State, California, Miami, DePaul, Oklahoma State, Mercer, Minnesota, Buffalo, Nebraska.
The STI/Hoopfeed Poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of media members and other women’s basketball professionals. Total points are based on 25 points for first place through one point for 25th.
