The top five teams in the first Sport Tours International/Hoopfeed poll of 2018 remained the same since the last poll of 2017: Connecticut, Louisville, Notre Dame, Mississippi State and South Carolina. Next, Tennessee and Baylor are in a tie for sixth place. Oregon moved up two places to No. 8 while Texas and Florida State rounded out the top 10.
Iowa had the biggest positive movement in the poll, advancing six places to No. 18. The Hawkeyes finished 2017 with wins over Wisconsin and last week’s No. 21 team, Michigan. This week Iowa will undergo a tough test when the team travels to No. 13 Maryland on Thursday.
Oklahoma State also saw a significant jump, moving up four places to No. 19, a position the Cowgirls share in a tie with Texas A&M. In the last week of 2017, Oklahoma State defeated Texas Tech and Kansas State in the onset of Big 12 Conference play.
Stanford started Pac-12 competition with a bang with back-to-back wins beating USC and last week’s No. 11 UCLA. The Cardinal re-entered the poll after falling out last week to land at No. 23 this week.
Arizona State entered the poll at No. 25 after beating Colorado and Utah during the closing week of 2017.
After going undefeated during the non-conference season, West Virginia fell to No. 9 Texas in the second game of Big 12 play for the Mountaineers. As a result, WVU fell four places and out of the top ten to No. 12.
Villanova fell three places to No. 21 after losing to unranked Butler this week and to Creighton last week. Green Bay and South Florida fell out of the top 25. Unranked Northern Kentucky beat last week’s No. 19 Green Bay 62-54 last Saturday.
Teams that received votes: South Florida, Rutgers, Miami and Green Bay.
The STI/Hoopfeed Poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of media members and other women’s basketball professionals. Total points are based on 25 points for first place through one point for 25th.
