While undefeated Connecticut held on as the No. 1 team in the country, there was a lot of movement in the top ten of the Sport Tours International/Hoopfeed poll over the past week. Several ranked teams experienced upsets including last week’s No. 2, Louisville.
The Cardinals fell to No. 4 in the poll after losing 50-49 on their home court to the Florida State Seminoles on Sunday. It was the first loss of the season for Louisville.
With that statement victory under their belt, along with a win over Wake Forest earlier in the week, the Seminoles rose four places in the poll to land at No. 7, the highest ranking for FSU all season.
Mississippi State is the only other undefeated team in the country. The Bulldogs also have the best record in the nation at 20-0 compared to UConn’s 18-0. Last week Mississippi State took down Tennessee 71-52 in a road win that helped to solidify their position at the top of the Southeastern Conference. Tennessee fell five places to No. 10. It was the second loss in a week for the Lady Vols after falling Thursday night to this week’s No. 5, Notre Dame.
Baylor improved in the rankings, moving up one spot to No. 3. The Bears defeated Iowa State and Kansas State last week.
TCU entered the poll for the first time this season at No. 24. The Horned Frogs beat Kansas on Saturday. So far this month, TCU has taken down two ranked teams: West Virginia (76-74 OT on Jan. 13) and Texas (79-77 on Jan. 10).
West Virginia had the biggest drop of teams in the rankings, going from No. 13 to No. 19 this week. The Mountaineers began the week on a tough note losing to this week’s No. 20 Oklahoma State 79-73 last Wednesday.
Other teams that received votes: Arizona State, Rutgers, South Florida, Utah, Florida Gulf Coast, Stanford and Marquette.
Dropped out: Arizona State.
The STI/Hoopfeed Poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of media members and other women’s basketball professionals. Total points are based on 25 points for first place through one point for 25th.
