Purdue coach Sharon Versyp reveals early stage breast cancer diagnosis
Release from Purdue:
Purdue women’s basketball head coach Sharon Versyp revealed Monday that she has now joined the community of men and women fighting cancer, as she has recently been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). She is in the earliest stages of this form of breast cancer, and while she is still discussing treatment options with her physicians, she is very encouraged with the prognosis.
“I feel incredibly blessed to have caught this in its earliest stages, and cannot stress enough the importance of regular screenings and mammograms,” said Versyp. “With an incredible support group around me from my family, my staff and our Purdue community, I know that I’ll beat this and come back stronger.”
Having compiled a 22-12 mark to date in her 11th season with the Boilermakers, Versyp has no plans to miss any of Purdue’s postseason competition, which will be announced by NCAA on Monday, March 13. She is not the first member of the Boilermaker staff to battle cancer as director of operations Terry Kix was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2011, while assistant coach Beth Couture was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009.
