Tennessee: Guard Andraya Carter ends her playing career due to recurring injuries
Tennessee announced today that 5-9 guard Andraya Carter, a redshirt senior, is ending her playing career due to recurring injuries. Carter wrote a letter explaining the decision to stop playing that was posted on the Vols Athletic website.
Her letter started with the following:
“As a child, I always had one dream: to be recruited by Pat Summitt and be a Lady Vol basketball player. Wearing an orange, white and accent blue jersey with the one and only TENNESSEE across the front has been an honor and a privilege that I will cherish forever.”
Later she explained that “after talking with my family, doctors, surgeons and coaches, I have decided that it is in my best interest to forgo my fifth year of eligibility and focus on letting my body heal and recover. As I mentioned, injuries were something that I dealt with pretty easily during the past four years. However, no matter how strong willed or strong minded a person is, the body starts to speak for itself.”
Over her career she averaged 6.4 points per game and 2.62 rebounds per contest. She tore her left anterior cruciate ligament in high school. In her freshman year she only played seven games due to  shoulder injury that required surgery.  After the 2014-15 season underwent a surgical procedure on her left knee.
She excelled in the classroom and earned a degree in communication studies landing on the SEC Honor Roll three time as well as winning various other academic awards. She is a graduate student working on a degree in sports psychology and is the 2015-16 Arthur Ashe Jr. Female Sports Scholar of the Year.
