Chicago Sky re-signs veteran center Erika de Souza
From the team:
Veteran center Erika de Souza has inked a deal to return to the Chicago Sky for the 2016 season. Per team policy, terms of the contract are not disclosed.
“We are excited to have Erika back in Chicago,” said Sky Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman. “She’s an elite post player, whose presence was a key addition to our team last year.”
The Sky acquired de Souza in a three-team trade midway through the 2015 season that included sending former Sky center Sylvia Fowles and the Sky’s second-round pick in the 2016 draft to Minnesota. De Souza started in all 17 games for the Dream during the first half of the 2015 season averaging 8.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and then played in 17 games with the Sky and averaged 5.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.
Entering her 11th WNBA season, the 6-foot-5 center currently holds the 14th spot on the WNBA All-Time Leaders List with 338 total blocks. De Souza is a three-time WNBA All-Star (2009, 2013, 2014) with career averages of 10.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
“I couldn’t be happier to continue my commitment in the city that embraced me last season,” said de Souza. “Everyone, from the players and coaches to the fans, has made me feel welcome and supported. I’m excited to return.”
The Sky opens the 2016 regular season against the Connecticut Sun on Saturday, May 14 at Allstate Arena.
