Sacramento State shattered the NCAA Division I record for treys with 25 made three-pointers in a game during a 126-78 rout of Portland State Saturday. The previous record for made threes in a game was 22, set by Florida Gulf Coast against East Tennessee State in 2013. Sacramento State (7-10, 4-2 Big Sky) held the Big Sky record with 21 made 3-pointers against UC Irvine in 2013 but surpassed that total with nine 3-pointers made in the fourth quarter on Saturday against the Vikings.

“I was pleased with how we responded from last week, because last week we accepted a slow game and didn’t really attack,” said Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad, whose team had totaled 134 points and just 14 made threes in its last two games. “Today we came out and played with confidence and we made shots and had a good energy level. I’m proud of the team and it’s great that we were able to get that record.”

Freshman Raegen Rohn tied the team NCAA record with a made trey with 3:46 left to play, then broke the record with the team’s 23rd 3-pointer less than a minute later. Sophomore Abbey Goodsell hit No. 24 with 1:49 to play and sophomore Justyce Dawson had the last make with 1:25 remaining.

Sacramento State was 9-of-17 (52.9 %) from 3-point range in the fourth quarter after hitting 16 threes through the first 30 minutes and shot a blistering 25-55 (45.0%) from the arc overall. Junior Brianna Burgos equaled her career high of six made 3-pointers while Dawson, Rohn, and Goodsell all made four long balls and Maranne Johnson,Taylor Brown, and Ericka Magaña each hit two.

Burgos scored a career-high 32 points, the most any Hornet has scored in a game since 2012, shooting 12-of-23 overall with five assist and five steals. She scored 25 points in the first half alone as Sacramento State held a relatively slim 23-18 lead at the end of the first quarter but extended to a 58-44 edge at the half.

Portland State (2-15, 0-6 Big Sky), which had just eight healthy players available on Saturday, shot 40% in the first half but was just 3-of-16 in the third quarter as the Hornets had a 31-14 scoring edge in the quarter. Sacramento State scored 37 points in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 52 points in the final minutes.

Sacramento State also broke the program record with 34 assists in the game, just one shy of the Big Sky record, while equaling the second most points scored in a game in program history, topped only by the 132 points the team scored against the Vikings three weeks ago in The Nest.

The Hornets have now scored 473 points in their last four games over the last two seasons against Portland State, averaging 118 points per game and winning by an average margin of 42 points. Saturday’s 48-point margin of victory tied the program record against a Div. I team, exactly matching the team’s 126-78 win over UC Irvine Dec. 22.
