Tulsa Shock renamed Dallas Wings, social media recap of announcement
The Dallas Wings is the new name of the former Tulsa Shock (and previous to that, Detroit Shock) the franchise revealed Monday. The team announced its move to Arlington in July and will play at the College Park Center on the campus of University of Texas-Arlington. The venue has a seating capacity of 7,000. The team left Detroit in 2009.
The new name and logo were introduced by Full Court Partners, LLC, the ownership group for the WNBA team relocating to the DFW Metroplex for the 2016 season along with head coach Fred Williams and guards Skylar Diggins and Odyssey Sims. NBA deputy commissioner/chief operating officer Mark Tatum also attended. It was previously announced that WNBA president Laurel Richie would be at the event.
“We are thrilled to bring the WNBA to the DFW Metroplex, home to some of the most passionate basketball fans in the world,” said Tatum. “As we prepare for our historic twentieth season, this is a very exciting time for the league and its teams, and we are pleased that the Dallas Wings will be part of the celebration.”
Business executive and investor Bill Cameron, who has owned the team for seven years, will remain majority Owner and chairman of the team.
“We are bringing to the Metroplex a young and dynamic team with tremendous upside,” said Cameron. “They are fun to watch and they will endear themselves to their new home. The presence of Skylar and Odyssey today for this major announcement underscores the excitement of the team to represent this market in the WNBA. These professional athletes are without a doubt some the finest athletes in the world.”
Texas native Chris Christian, a songwriter/record producer will serve as vice chairman and managing partner for the Dallas Wings.
“This is an exciting time for the DFW Metroplex as women’s professional basketball returns after 30 years,” said Christian. “The next generation of girls and boys will now have a new team of professional athletes to cheer for and inspire by their hard work, commitment, dedication, discipline and the love of competition.”
The logo resembles Pegasus, much like the downtown landmark of the Pegasus flying-horse sign that was originally on the Magnolia building.

I’m sure the WNBA will get around to tweeting out the new name and logo – Dallas Wings- of one of its franchises any minute now …. Sigh.

Naming a sports franchise the ‘Dallas Wings’ is a brilliant way to encourage a vendor bidding war. I’m rooting for Wingstop.
