Cal Poly (2-1) continues its two–game road trip at No. 21 Cal (3-0) Sunday afternoon. Across the Bay, the Mustangs defeated San Francisco Friday night, 62-61, after a back-and-forth battle. Senior point guard Lisa Marie Sanchez led her team with 16 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Beth Balbierz and sophomore guard Dynn Leaupepe were also in double figures with 10 points each. The Cal Poly defense forced 19 turnovers, including 11 in the first half.
In Cal Poly’s season opener, a 56-45 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Balbierz knocked down five 3-pointers on the way to 21 points, matching both career highs. The Mustangs dropped their next contest, a loss to Texas Rio Grande Valley, 66-58.
Cal rides into the game on a three-game streak to start the season with a top 25 ranking in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls. The Golden Bears, a team with no seniors, is led by a brigade of junior forward Courtney Range, freshman guard Asha Thomas and freshman forward Kristine Anigwe.
