USA Basketball to conduct youth camps for girls in 7th to 12th grades in California and North Carolina
USA Basketball will conduct two Youth Development Regional Skills Camps open to girls basketball players in 7th-12th grades this October.
- The West regional will take place from Oct. 17-18 at Jamtown in Oakland, California. Registration/Details
- The East regional camp will be held Oct. 23-25 at the Gateway YWCA in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Registration/Details
The camps will combine on-court skills sessions and scrimmages with off-court educational sessions. Â The East regional will be capped at 150 players, while the West regional will be capped at 200 athletes.
The cost to attend either camp is $180. Early bird registration is available through Sept. 7 for $150. This price includes a USA Basketball jersey and general athlete insurance. Athletes are responsible for their meals, lodging and transportation. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Carol Callan, USA Basketball Women’s National Team director, will serve as the camp director at both events. The West regional camp will feature Sue Phillips (Archbishop Mitty H.S./San Jose Cagers AAU, Calif.) as the lead clinician, and Jill Rankin Schneider will be the lead clinician for the East regional camp.
Phillips led the USA to gold medals at the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship, and she was a head coach of the West team that won bronze at the 2003 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival.
Schneider led the USA to gold at the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship, and she was head coach of the 1982 USA Select Team that played in Bolivia. As a USA Basketball athlete, Schneider was a 1979 FIBA World Championship gold medalist and a 1980 U.S. Olympian. She won gold at the 1980 FIBA Olympic Qualifier, silver at the 1979 Pan American Games and gold at the 1979 R. William Jones Cup.
Additionally, serving as court coaches at the West regional will be Markisha Coleman (Menlo-Atherton H.S., Calif.), Jody Craig (Foothill J.C., Calif.), Bryan Gardere (Piedmont H.S., Calif.), Melanie Murphy (Sacred Heart Preparatory, Calif. ) and Kelly Sopak (Miramonte H.S, Calif.).
Among the court coaches for the East regional are Katie Pate (Lenoir-Rhyne University) and Brian Robinson (Bishop McGuinness H.S./Winston-Salem Stealers, N.C.). Robinson is a two-time USA Basketball gold-medal winner as an assistant coach at the women’s 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship.
During the camps, players will take part in skills development drills and activities, scrimmages and sessions away from the court on fitness and wellness.
