Tennessee Martin dismisses Ashia Jones, leading scorer and OVC Female Athlete of the Year
From the school:
University of Tennessee at Martin head women’s basketball coach Kevin McMillan announced today that Ashia Jones will not return for the 2015-16 season.
“It is an honor and a privilege to represent UT Martin, not just on the basketball court but in any walk of life,” McMillan said. “Ashia is in good academic standing and has not had any legal troubles whatsoever but she has not been able to abide by the standards we set for our program on a consistent basis. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”
Jones is coming off an All-American and Ohio Valley Conference Female Athlete of the Year season as a sophomore in 2014-15. The 6-1 native of Covington, Tenn. led the OVC and ranked fourth in the nation with 23.4 points per game while becoming the third-fastest player in program history to reach 1,000 career points – accomplishing the feat in 57 games.
Jones was named OVC Player of the Year as a sophomore, following an OVC Freshman of the Year campaign in 2013-14. She tied the UT Martin single-game scoring record with 44 points at Murray State on Jan. 31, 2015 on her way to breaking the program’s single-season scoring record (772 points) as a sophomore.
