South Carolina adds heralded transfer from Georgia Tech, 6-2 guard Kaela Davis

South Carolina head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley announced that Kaela Davis (Suwanee, Ga./Buford HS) has signed a financial aid agreement to attend the University and play for the Gamecocks. Davis, who was a two-time All-ACC selection at Georgia Tech, will have two years of eligibility beginning in 2016-17.
“We are so grateful Kaela and her family chose to continue her career as a South Carolina Gamecock,” Staley said. “Kaela’s experience and skill set will be a great addition to our team as we work toward getting back to the Final Four and compete for national championships.”
The fastest Yellow Jacket to score 1,000 career points (52 games), Davis has a career 18.9 scoring average. Her 594 points as a freshman (2013-14) set the Georgia Tech and ACC freshman scoring records and ranks third all-time on the Georgia Tech single-season scoring list. The numbers came primarily from long range as the 6-foot-2 guard made 85 3-pointers, shooting 34.6 percent from behind the arc.
Last season, Davis turned in 19.2 points per game to rank third in the ACC while also averaging 1.6 assists and 1.5 steals per game to earn first-team All-ACC honors from both the coaches and the media. Her 652 points broke the Georgia Tech single-season scoring record and helped her also earn Georgia College Player of the Year honors from the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Davis, whose father Antonio Davis played 12 seasons in the NBA with the Pacers, Raptors, Bulls and Knicks, was the No. 1 ranked guard and the No. 2 ranked recruit overall in the class of 2013, coming out of Buford High School. She was a McDonald’s and WBCA All-America selection and won the 3-point shooting contest at the McDonald’s All-American game festivities. Davis has international experience as well, earning gold medals with USA Basketball at 2012 FIBA U17 World Championships, 2012 FIBA 3×3 U18 World Championships and 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.
Davis joins fellow ACC transfer Sarah Imobvioh (Virginia) and Shay Colley (Brampton, Ontario) in the Gamecocks’ 2015 signing class.
