Dishin & Swishin 4/09/15 Podcast: UConn three-peats, what separates the Huskies from the rest of the pack
As I am sure you know, on Tuesday night the Connecticut Huskies three-peated the national championship, giving head coach Geno Auriemma his tenth title since 1995.
So what does UConn do that makes them separate themselves from the pack? Why are they a dynasty, and not someone else? The game has certainly changed and evolved over the years, yet the Huskies roll on.
It is with great pleasure we welcome to the Dishin & Swishin podcast two head coaches with a Husky pedigree:
- Jamelle Elliott, a member of the 1995 championship team, assistant coach at UConn from 1998 to 2009, and current head coach at Cincinnati
- Tonya Cardoza, played against UConn in the NCAA tournament while with Virginia, assistant coach at UConn from 1994 to 2008 and current head coach at Temple
The duo brings the unusual perspective of former player for and against Auriemma, employee to him for many years, and now competitor in the same conference as Auriemma and the Huskies.
Both are trying to help the American Athletic Conference shed the current perspective of a lower level conference with one or two superior teams. Elliott’s Cincinnati teams have been blistered by crucial injuries and departures impacting their results, but had shown improvement prior to this season. Cardoza’s Temple team many felt could have made the NCAA tournament, and responded with a semi-final run in the WNIT before falling to West Virginia.
We put the wraps on the NCAA season by looking at the champions, the UConn Huskies. Congratulations!
