#14 Cal wins tournament, downs Creighton 94-69
BERKELEY, Calif. – While Creighton (3-3) never backed down from #14 Cal (6-0) for a fast-paced contest, the Golden Bears were relentless in keeping a commanding lead over the Bluejays for a 94-69 win Saturday night at Haas Pavilion in the final of the Cal Classic.
Tournament MVP, Cal senior point guard Brittany Boyd, who posted her second career triple-double Friday night against San Jose State, was on course to match the feat against the Bluejays. Yet Cal head coach Lindsay Gottlieb had the luxury of using reserves for much of the second half so Boyd went to the bench down the stretch. She finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and five steals in just 22 minutes.
The win gave Cal its fourth consecutive Cal Classic championship. Reshanda Gray led the Bears with 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting while pulling down eight rebounds. Courtney Range (17 points) and Justine Hartman (13 points) both hit double figures scoring as well to pace Cal. Before Saturday’s game, senior forward Hartman was averaging just 0.4 points per game (2 points in five games) before setting her season high against Creighton.
Other teams participating in the tournament included Cincinnati. They lost to SJSU 79-54 in the consolation game Saturday afternoon.
The Cal Classic All-Tournament Team consisted of Gray, Range, Ana Owens of Cincinnati, Jasmine Smith of San Jose State and Marissa Janning of Creighton.
California hosts Sacramento State on Wednesday with tip-off scheduled for 11 a.m. PT at Haas Pavilion. Creighton returns home to face Seton Hall on the same day in a game that will be televised on Fox Sports 1 at 6:05 p.m. ET.
