UConn defeats Stanford in Final Four 75-56, sets up showdown vs. undefeated Notre Dame
NASHVILLE – It was not pretty, it was not dominant. Yet in the end, Geno Auriemma’s Connecticut Huskies persevered, defended, and hit enough shots to defeat a gritty Stanford (33-4) team, 75-56.
The Cardinal, led by guard Lili Thompson, came out of the gate aggressive and determined, opening up an early lead before UConn went on one of their famous runs to end the first half with a 28-24 lead.
The second half was all about UConn, as an early 10-0 run extended the lead, and the Huskies never faltered, letting their defense control the tempo of the game. They forced thirteen Stanford turnovers and racked up ten steals.
Offensively, UConn was balanced. Six players contributed over 20 minutes, all six had nine or more points, led by Breanna Stewart’s 18 and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis’ 15.
Stanford senior Chiney Ogwumike ended her career with yet another double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
UConn (39-0) will play Connecticut in the battle of unbeaten teams, Tuesday at 8:30 pm ET.
