Connecticut, Tennessee, South Carolina and Notre Dame get top seeds in NCAA tourney

The Southeastern Conference has two teams with No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament: traditional power Tennessee (27-5) and Dawn Staley’s upstart South Carolina (27-4), a squad that surprised many with several big wins over ranked teams this past season. The nation’s top-ranked team Connecticut (34-0) and Notre Dame (32-0) join the SEC members in the ranks of top seeds.

There is the possibility that former Big East rivals Connecticut and Notre Dame could meet again at the Final Four in the last game of the tournament to determine the national champion. Undefeated Connecticut ended the season atop both the AP and the USA Today Coaches’ polls, positions the Huskies held all season, relinquishing the pinnacle to no one. Notre Dame is the only other undefeated team among Division I programs.

Connecticut begins play March 23 against Prairie View (14-17) in the Lincoln Regional at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. South Carolina takes on Cal State Northridge (18-14) in the Stanford Regional earlier the same day.

Notre Dame plays Robert Morris (21-11) March 22 at Savage Arena in Toledo in the Notre Dame Regional. Tennessee follows with a game against Northwestern State (21-12) in the Louisville Regional on the Lady Vols’ home court in Knoxville.
