The New York Liberty signs forward Cheryl Ford
From the team:
New York Liberty Head Coach and General Manager Bill Laimbeer announced today that the team has reached a contract agreement with forward Cheryl Ford. Per team policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“While Cheryl has been away from the WNBA for the past three years, she is still one of the best rebounders in the world,” said Laimbeer. “She has championship experience and knows what’s expected. It’s great to have her back.”
“I am excited to return to the WNBA and thrilled to have the opportunity to play in New York,” said Ford. “Being able to reunite with former teammates and Coach Laimbeer is an added bonus. I look forward to contributing to building a championship culture with the Liberty.”
Ford, a four-time WNBA All-Star, returns to the league after spending the past four seasons playing internationally. She played in Detroit under Laimbeer for seven seasons, winning three championships (2003, 2006, 2008). The third pick overall in 2003, she was named Rookie of the Year after averaging a double-double with 10.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game in her first season. Ford is also a two-time All-WNBA Second Team selection and earned All-Star MVP honors in 2007.
In seven seasons, Ford has averaged 10.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. In her 38 WNBA playoff games, she has posted 9.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest. Internationally, Ford has played in Poland, Czech Republic, Italy and is currently a member of Canik Bld in Turkey. She is averaging 15.5 points and 14.3 rebounds over 22 games this season.
The Liberty 2013 regular season home opener is on May 31 against the Tulsa Shock at Prudential Center.
