Baylor sweeps Big 12 honors for coach, player and defensive player of the year for the third consecutive season
Big 12 regular season champion Baylor picked up honors for coach, player and defensive player of the year for the third consecutive season in highlighting the 2012-13 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Conference Women’s Basketball Awards. The Lady Bears also received the sixth man award.
Kim Mulkey earned her fourth Big 12 Coach of the Year honor while senior Brittney Griner became the second player to be named Big 12 Player of the Year three times and the first to garner Defensive Player of the Year all four seasons in her career. Former Oklahoma player Courtney Paris also earned three player of the year accolades from 2007-09. Destiny Williams picked up the Sixth Man Award.
Portia Durrett (Oklahoma) and Jackie Patterson (Texas Tech) were selected Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, the first tie for this award in the history of the Conference. Imani McGee-Stafford (Texas) was voted Big 12 Freshman of the Year while Brittany Chambers picked up the newest award for Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The honors were voted on by the league’s head coaches who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Mulkey, in her 13th season at Baylor, led the program to its fourth Big 12 regular season title with a 29-1 overall record and an 18-0 league mark. This is the second consecutive season the Lady Bears have gone undefeated in Big 12 play and they are 51-1 over the past three years. Baylor has also won 69 of its last 70 overall games and is 103-4 since 2010-11. The Lady Bears are ranked No. 1 in the national polls and will enter the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship as the No. 1 seed.
Griner leads the Big 12 in scoring (23.3), blocks (4.1) and field goal percentage (.599) while ranking seventh in rebounds (8.9). She is the Big 12’s career leader in scoring (3,123) and blocks (721) and holds national records for blocks and dunks (14). Griner is one of just six players in NCAA history to surpass 3,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. She set the Big 12 single game scoring record with 50 points in her regular season finale.
As Baylor’s first player off the bench, Williams plays 20.4 minutes a game and is fourth on the team in scoring (8.1) and second in rebounding (6.8). She is hitting .523 from the field (102-of-195). Williams ranks ninth in the Big 12 in rebounding and seventh in field goal percentage.
Durrett, a transfer from Walters State, has played in all but two of the Sooners’ 30 games this year. She averages 3.6 points and 2.9 rebounds in 10 minutes of action. Patterson has played in 29 games with three starts for Texas Tech after transferring from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. She contributes 4.5 points and 3.0 rebounds while playing close to 16 minutes a game.
McGee-Stafford has emerged as an offensive and defensive threat in her rookie season. She is fourth on the Texas squad and 21st in the Big 12 in scoring with 11 points and averages 9.3 rebounds – good for second at UT and fifth in the league. Her 73 blocks are third in the Conference. McGee-Stafford leads the Big 12 freshmen in rebounding and blocks, and is second in scoring.
Chambers, a senior Pre-Med student, earned the inaugural Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award that is presented to a student-athlete in each sport, beginning with the current academic year. In addition to her academic accomplishments, she is also an All-Big 12 First Team selection. Chambers is second in the league with 20.2 points and eighth with 7.5 rebounds.
