Led by Sims, Baylor routs Texas Tech 89-47 as Griner notches 54th career double-double
No. 1 Baylor (23-1, 13-0) completed a regular season sweep of Texas Tech Tuesday night in Waco with an 89-47 rout in front of 8,538 fans.
Junior point guard Odyssey Sims led her team with 18 points, six steals and five assists.
“We are just out there having fun,” said Sims. “I think when we came out with intensity, like we did when we played them the first time, we never let up. We got on them from the jump and it is always exciting when you are up by a lot and you can share the ball and have fun with it at the same time.”
The two teams last met January 30 in Lubbock. Baylor won 90-60 with a 40-point, 15-rebound performance from Brittney Griner that also included a dunk.
Last night Griner finished with 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the 54th double-double in her career. Brooklyn Pope scored 17 points for the Lady Bears and Kimetria Hayden had 10 plus seven assists.
Chynna Brown had 15 points for Texas Tech (18-7, 8-5) while teammate Casey Morris contributed 10.
Texas Tech coach Kristy Curry commented the difference between this season’s Lady Bears and last year’s championship team.
“I just think their maturity level and decision-making has grown up,” said Curry. “I think they’re deeper than they were a year ago. They have got players in practice that really work to improve. They also got a couple big bodies inside. Those are a couple factors that make them better.”
Baylor hosts TCU on Saturday. The Horned Frogs have yet to win a Big 12 game in their first season in the league. Texas Tech hosts Texas on Sunday.
