Florida Gulf Coast sets a new NCAA DI three-point record in rout of ETSU

In a 97-60 win over East Tennessee State (3-8, 1-3), Florida Gulf Coast (12-5, 5-0) set the NCAA Division I women’s basketball single-game team record for three-point field goals with 22 made shots Saturday afternoon.

“We shot the ball really well today,” said FGCU head coach Karl Smesko. “It was nice to a lot of players get hot in the same game, because it really worked to our advantage. I was not aware that we were approaching the record, but we shoot a lot of three’s every game so if we hit those shots at a high percentage we’ll probably be around that record number.”

Freshman Stephanie Haas made the shot that tied the record at the 6:44 mark of the second half and fellow first-year Amanda Moore drilled a three-pointer with 1:48 left in the game that gave the Eagles the all-time mark.

FGCU shot 22-of-43 three-pointers for 51.2 percent. Seven Eagles made at least one trey. Betsy Adams led FGCU with 25 points and made 7-of-12 three-point field goals. Anthi Chatzigiakoumi had 15 points plus four rebounds. Sarah Hansen and Joyce Iamstrong contributed 12 points each. Iamstrong was 4-of-4 from beyond the arc.

The Eagles, who have made at least one three-pointer in 214 consecutive contests and 326 of 327 games in program history, have drained double-digit trifectas four times this season and now have 150 triples as a team.

Previously, FGCU and New Mexico State were tied at 21 for the record. In February 2002, New Mexico State shot 21-of-41 versus Louisiana-Lafayette. In November 2011, FGCU shot 21-of-51 versus Webber International.
