Australian Opal Lauren Jackson breaks Olympic scoring record
From Basketball Australia:
Australian Opals women’s basketball star Lauren Jackson last night broke the record for most career points scored by a women’s basketballer at the Olympic Games.
Jackson scored 12 points in the Opals 75-60 Quarter Final victory over China to move past former Brazil star Janeth Arcain and break the Olympic women’s basketball all-time scoring record.
Jackson hit a jumper with 3:46 remaining in the game that gave her 536 points, which is one more than Arcain’s Olympic career total.
Playing at her fourth Olympic Games, Jackson was recently honored with the role of flag bearer for the Australian Olympic Team at the Opening Ceremony in London.
Basketball Australia’s Chief Executive Officer Kristina Keneally – who is currently in London attending the Games – congratulated Jackson on her historic achievement.
“The record books will now show what we have known for quite some time – Australia’s own Lauren Jackson is the greatest women’s basketballer of all-time,” said Keneally.
“Only the best of the best play basketball at the Olympic level, and Lauren has now proven herself to be the greatest of hundreds of international superstars who have competed at the Games since women’s basketball was introduced in 1976.
“Lauren continues to inspire so many Australians with her phenomenal performances. We couldn’t be prouder of her, nor more grateful for the incredible service she has given both her team and the sport of basketball.”
