From USA Basketball:
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
What was it like for you scrimmaging against the USA team?
These ladies can play, it was a lot of fun. I’m just amazed they’ve been playing together for two days. It was as if they were playing for two months together. The precision, the toughness, the timing, it was just extraordinary to see after a day or two. They’re going to be tough. They’re going to be real tough.
How did they end up pulling you into today’s practice crew?
(Laughs) I’ve played with a couple of them from the past. Sylvia (Fowles) is from Chicago. I’ve played with Tamika (Catchings) in the NBA celebrity game the past couple of years. So I was thrilled when they asked. It was fun to be a part of. These are world, world-class athletes.
The thing for me is that they’re such great role models. They’re so humble. They work so hard. My daughter’s a huge fan. My son’s a huge fan. The impact they have on kids, both boys and girls, across the country is just amazing. They’re legends. They’re like kids. They’re working so hard, no egos, no selfishness. It’s really fun to see. I hope kids know what a special team this is.
