Big 12 Opening Weekend Roundup
While every team in the Big 12 still has an overall winning record, six teams, including two Associated Press Top 25 squads, went down over the weekend as the conference opened play for the season.
No. 1 Baylor, Texas Tech, No. 7 Texas A&M, Kansas State, No. 19 Oklahoma and Missouri came out victorious. Missouri (9-6, Big 12 1-0) claimed the biggest upset of the weekend, upsetting No. 22 Texas (11-4, 0-1) in overtime on Saturday. The Tigers had home court advantage and overcame a 12-point deficit in the final minutes of the game to defeat the Longhorns 85-80. Missouri shot 57.7 percent in the second half while Texas shot 39 percent after the break. The win was only the second time that Missouri defeated Texas. The Longhorns entered the game with a 19-1 advantage in the all-time series over the Tigers.
Top-ranked Baylor underscored its number one position with a win over visiting No. 17 Iowa State Saturday morning extending the Lady Bears win streak to 11. Baylor freshman Odyssey Sims led the team in rebounding, earning an accolade usually held by 6-8 center Brittney Griner. The first-year floor leader also had 15 points. Griner finished with 25 points.
Texas A&M beat Colorado, paced by Danielle Adams’ 18 points and 10 rebounds, her ninth career double-double and sixth this season. She has scored double figures in 23 straight games. The Aggies have won seven straight games. Brittany Spears led Colorado with 21 points.
Texas Tech won a road game beating Kansas, 61-57 and won its sixth straight game in a thriller decided in the last four minutes of the contest. The Lady Raiders went 10-0 in the final minutes climbing back from a six point deficit. Kansas led 34-25 at the half. Kierra Mallard had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Texas Tech. Teena Wickett also had 15 points.
Oklahoma went to town on the road, routing last year’s regular season champion Nebraska Cornhuskers, 70-50. Freshmen led the way for the Sooners. Aaryn Ellenberg led the Sooners with 19 points while Morgan Hook added 16. Nebraska committed 19 turnovers and could not get into an offensive flow, frustrated by the Sooner’s defense. Nebraska shot a 29.6 percent, a season low.
Kansas State delivered a decisive defeat to Oklahoma State in Manhattan on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats had the largest crowd on hand in four seasons at 9,024, when they defeated the Cowgirls, 63-45. K-State had a season high 12 three-point shots. Brittany Chambers and Alina Voronenko both finished with 16 points for the Wildcats.
Big 12 action starts up this week on Tuesday when Iowa State hosts Nebraska on Tuesday at Hilton Coliseum. Both teams are looking to avoid an 0-2 start in conference play. The Cyclones are 10-4 in Big 12 home openers. Last year, Iowa State also opened its Big 12 home schedule against Nebraska. The Cornhuskers won last year, 57-49. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. The game will be televised by Mediacom.
