Denied. DePaul Blue Demons avoid having Tara VanDerveer celebrate a milestone in their house
The DePaul Blue Demons did not let Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer get her 800th career victory in their house Thursday night. DePaul beat the Pac-10 powerhouse 93-71 in Chicago.
The No. 3 AP Poll-ranked Cardinal came into McGrath Arena with an undefeated record and the No. 2 position in the USA TODAY/ESPN coach’s poll.
No. 25 DePaul (13-1) on the other hand, had a nine game winning streak but had suffered a loss early in the season against Purdue. However, the divide in ranking did not deter the Blue Demons from handily defeating Stanford (6-1).
The Blue Demons led at halftime, 37-35, and never looked back after the break pulling away to finish with a 22 point lead. Junior Keisha Hampton had a game-high 27 points for DePaul and senior Felicia Chester added 24 points and seven rebounds.
For the Cardinal, senior Jeanette Pohlen had 23 points.
Thursday night’s game was the second meeting between the two teams. Stanford and DePaul met for the first time last year. The Cardinal defeated the Blue Demons, 96-60, on December 13, 2009 at Maples Pavilion.
DePaul’s next game is Tuesday, December 21 at Arizona State. Stanford is back in action on Sunday against Tennessee in a televised matchup on ESPN2.
