Indiana Fever guard Katie Douglas wins WNBA Cares Community Assist Award for August
Indiana Fever guard Katie Douglas is the winner of the WNBA Cares Community Assist Award for August. Douglas is a team leader in mmunity outreach, including the Fever’s Breast Health Awareness program.
From the league:
Douglas’s personal experience with cancer — she tragically lost both her father and her mother to the disease at a young age — prompted her desire to get involved with her team’s breast health awareness efforts and other cancer organizations. As the spokesperson for the Fever’s Breast Health Awareness program, Douglas recently led her teammates on a visit to Community Regional Cancer Center in Indianapolis to spend time with patients and personally invite them to the Fever’s Breast Health Awareness game on Aug. 6. Prior to tip-off, Douglas greeted fans and spoke to them about the importance of getting regular medical checkups. She also participated in the postgame live auction to help the Fever raise more than $44,000 for the Community Breast Health Fund, highlighted by the “Katie Douglas Experience Package†which included a game of HORSE, lunch, and a movie with Douglas.
“I am fortunate to be able to share my personal experiences with cancer in the hopes that it can make a difference,†Douglas said. “I am committed to raising awareness and funding to find a cure for cancer, and I encourage others to lend a hand in the fight against this devastating disease.â€
To further lend her support, Douglas is the honorary chair for this year’s St. Francis Foundation fundraiser, which provides aid to patients in hospice care, many of whom are terminally ill cancer patients. She also assists other nonprofit organizations, including Helping Her Heal – which fights all cancers that effect women – and has been a guest speaker for Brook’s Place, an organization that supports young people who have lost a parent or loved one.
