Stanford dismisses point guard JJ Hones from team.
Update: Stanford police arrested Hones on May 2 for driving under the influence, reckless driving, evading a police officer and resisting arrest.
Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer dismissed point guard JJ Hones from the program for a violation of team rules on Monday.
Knee injuries stymied the fourth-year junior’s career at Stanford. She suffered an ACL tear in her left knee during her freshman season during a game in February 2007 against California. She re-tore the ACL in a game against Rutgers on November 23, 2008. She had surgery on the knee after last season and hoped to return to Stanford for a fifth year.
Hones came to Stanford after playing at Southridge High School in Beaverton, Oregon. She was the 2006 Gatorade State Player of the Year.
She is only the second player to be dismissed from the Stanford program. Tanda Rucker was booted from the team in 1993. Rucker played on the 1992 national championship team and in 2006 served prison time for abusing minors.
