WNBA training camps underway
Training camps across the league are in full swing. While many of the WNBA’s veterans are still overseas competing, rookies and other training camp invitees are getting a chance to strut their stuff in front of coaching staffs.
Several teams are tweeting updates from training camp, tiny missives filled with excitement and exuberance. However, as the European and Turkish postseasons wind down and the Australian national team finishes workouts, players will return. The cuts will commence.
Teams can have up to 15 players per day in training camp and many rosters will show more than that because of the overseas factor. For dozens of players, a roster spot will last for a couple of weeks at most. The hard truth is that dozens will be waived and the approximately 200 listed will be whittled to 132 as teams finalize who will make their final roster count of 11 players.
Preseason play starts on Friday, April 30 with a 1 p.m. ET matinee between the Chicago Sky and the Minnesota Lynx at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fans can expect a flurry of activity on May 14, the deadline for final roster cuts. The regular season begins the next day.
