Game capsule: San Antonio vs. New York
SAN ANTONIO – Before Saturday night, the San Antonio Silver Stars and the New York Liberty were both winless. San Antonio (1-1) ended the night with a victory, defeating New York (0-3) 63-60.
Led by Becky Hammon (16 points, five rebounds) and Sophia Young (15 points, five rebounds), the Silver Stars won their home opener in front of a rowdy crowd of 10,572.
There were many lead changes, even until late in the game–seven ties overall. New York led at the half by only two points, 31-29.
Helen Darling started for San Antonio in Place of Erin Perperoglou who came off the bench in the second half.
“Coach likes to switch it up,” said Darling post-game of her start. “Plus Erin has not been feeling too well.” Darling played for 27 minutes and finished with five points, three assists and two rebounds.
San Antonio guard Edwige Lawson-Wade is day-to-day, sick with the flu. Shanna Crossley also did not play. She is still recovering from a left knee injury.
There were no inactive players on New York’s roster. Loree Moore started for the Liberty after coming off the bench in their first two games.
Shameka Christon led the Liberty with 21 points. They lost their first home game June 7 to the Connecticut Sun, 66-57 and are now 3-10 for home openers.
The Silver Stars and the Liberty complete their series Friday, June 19 in New York at Madison Square Garden.
