LSU’s Van Chancellor resigns

LSU press release

After not being invited to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998, Louisiana State head coach Van Chancellor resigned. He will take an administrative position in the LSU Athletic Department.

The NCAA Division I women’s basketball selection committee revealed the 64-team bracket Monday evening and LSU was absent.

Chancellor declined an invitation to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

“LSU is not an NIT program, this is an NCAA program, and that’s what we’re going to be,” said Chancellor according to Nola.com. “We’re not going to the NIT.”

LSU finished the season 19-13 (8-8 SEC) in Chancellor’s fourth year at the school. The Hall of Famer, a former coach of the now-defunct WNBA Houston Comets, took over the program when Pokey Chatman resigned. Overall, he compiled a 90-40 (.698) record at LSU. He led the Lady Tigers to the Final Four in 2008.

The school’s search for a new coach will begin immediately.
